American Idol alum, Country singer Gabby Barrett joined RADIO.COM's Karson from Mix 104.1 in Boston today via Zoom and had a lot to say about her days at on the show. But before unpacking all of that, Gabby spoke about the current touring situation affecting artists of all genres, which she certainly hasn’t been immune to and how she’s looking forward to getting back on the road in 2021.

“This year seems to be pretty quiet with performing and people just being wise and taking precautions with things, but 2021 is something that I think everybody’s planning for.”

Gabby fully expects there to be plenty of fun tours in the new year, with artists already booking venues with hopes of an end, or at least the remission of the global health crisis.

“I think it’s gonna be crazy. I think people are itching to get out of their house again and see live music. So, I think it’ll be interesting.”

Gabby’s 2019 debut single, “I Hope,” saw impeccable success on the Billboard charts, hitting number 1 on the U.S. Country Airplay and Hot Country Songs lists, even getting a remix from pop singer Charlie Puth.

With heartbreaking lyrics like, “I hope she's wilder than your wildest dreams, she's everything you're ever gonna need. And then I hope she cheats, like you did on me,” Gabby feels that her upbringing on singers like Miranda Lambert and Carrie Underwood guided her through writing that song, which also helped her feel comfortable unveiling it to her father, for one, who will always see her as his little girl.

“He wasn’t surprised, quite honestly” Gabby admits. “He was more like, ‘oh yeeaah!’ So, he loved it. Granted, I would deal with that differently now that I have a wonderful husband. But it was a fun song to write.”

Gabby married fellow American Idol contestant Cade Foehner in October of 2019 and followed up that good news with the announcement of their first child this month, expecting a girl due in early 2021.

Fans will remember the big reveal that Cade made about their relationship on the show, complete with judge Katy Perry in a full-on Snow White get-up demanding to know details. Gabby, who met Gabe on the show, went on to explain why they kept that relationship a secret through the entire season.

“We were going on the show not for relationship purposes, we were going to hopefully win,” says Gabby. “It just kind of fell into place quickly. You spend so much time with each other, it’s easy to find a companion.”

“We weren’t the only ones dating on our season too,” she admits. “The top two were actually dating as well. The producers must have told Ryan Seacrest and then outed us and it was craziness.”

Although Gabby hasn’t received any motherhood texts from Perry as of yet, she’s definitely excited to see her and Orlando Bloom’s new bundle of joy who is expected to arrive any day now. “I’ve always been interested in seeing what part of the baby looks like which parent. It’s just so cool to me. So, her and Orlando I’m sure will have a beautiful child.”

While considering herself a tried and true Country girl, there’s no denying her breakout single “I Hope” has some serious pop leanings. “It’s pretty cool,” Gabby says, “to have my first song push spilling over into another genre. I would definitely say I’m a Country girl at heart; I wanted to make sure that I established my music first at Country just because that is the artist that I am. But it wanted to spill over into pop too, which I don’t have a problem with at all and I think is awesome because it spreads it to a broader audience of people.”

Karson, for one, was able to see those pop leanings early, during her Idol performance of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb.” Gabby, a fan of Cyrus’ early work, says that song is one of her favorites. “I had been doing that song since I was young. I started performing and touring when I was eleven – that had always been one of the covers that I always went to when I would sing.”

We wish Gabby the best in her days of pregnancy and marital bliss – she’s been praying for this time in her life since high school and it’s thrilling to watch her journey. Be sure to watch the full interview above.
